Is anyone familiar with IUDs? IUD stands for Intrauterine Device. It is a t-shaped plastic thingy with strings that can be placed in your uterus to provide birth control. The Mirena type offers a hormone called progestin that can also offer help with heavy periods, pain from heavy periods, and suppress endometriosis. The Mirena is effective for up to 5 years.
Question: Have you ever heard of the Mirena? Surprisingly, a lot of women haven't. I think it's because most women can tolerate the "by mouth" birth control pills with estrogen. It's when that isn't an option that things get a little tricky in the birth control world.
Another Question: Have you ever had or currently have an IUD? I'm curious as I consider this as an option for me...And it's not even a worry about birth control honestly. It is one of my very FEW options in order to try to treat the severe endometriosis I have. Heck, I've lost a number of organs to endometriosis- it has to be contained! The other issue is that I can't take any hormones by mouth, injection, etc. that has 1) estrogen and 2) has to be processed through my digestive tract/liver. The beauty of the Mirena is that everything stays in the area that it's giving off progestin to. (I realize I have just ended a sentence with a preposition...I'm being tired and overanalytic of my grammar right now.)
What I'm looking for are thoughts...advice...concerns...experiences...SHARE SHARE SHARE! Even if to message me without putting it on my wall here. I need to make some decisions...and well there are a lot of side effects to IUDs...and I can only look at all the negative comments on chat boards around the internet before everything sounds like a really bad idea :)
XOXO,
MEG

i'm pretty sure my sister in law uses mirena & likes it. let me ask her about it & i'll get back to you. also, my mother-in-law had an IUD for 15 years. granted, that's much, much longer than they usually leave those things in, but it worked & she hasn't had any negative consequences from it.
here's the email i got about it today.
Loved it. It was less invasive to "place it" than a pep smear and hardly even know I had it in. After 5 years it came out (2 min. in a Dr's office) and 1-2 mos later I was prego with Jack. Worth the cost even if insurance doesn't pay for it.
I have other friends who share my opinion. Hope this helps!..
Oh you need to try and conceive today so your baby could be born on 11/11/11.
I would do the Mirena!!
Thanks for info Sherilin! And Missy...getting pregnant now- NOT AN OPTION! :) LOL. Maybe I'll shoot for 12/12/12 OTFL.
I have the Mirena IUD. It will be 2 years in July. I still have a cycle because of some additional medication I'm on but it seriously lasts a day or two and is just enough that I notice in the restroom. No personal products needed. Does that make sense?
I will say however that having it put in hurt like HELL and I've given birth. It took me a good half hour after they were done to be able to walk without falling over and not to feel light headed.
But it was totally worth it. I will have another one put in when they remove this one. Well...that's if they won't tie my tubes then.
Good luck!
Just thought I'd share my experience with Mirena. I had it inserted on Nov 5, 2010. And like Gwen, it hurt beyond words to have it inserted. Since then, I've experienced random bleeding at least once a week; sometimes lasting up to two full weeks. They told me that would stop after the first two months, but it hasn't.
Secondly, and probably the worst, is the cramping. The doctors will tell you mild cramping is normal. Mild cramping won't make you pull the car over because you are in so much pain you can't see. My cramping has been pretty severe. Severe enough to make me cry, lose sleep, and shake.
I returned to the doctor to discuss my issues. After the ultrasound showed it was placed correctly, he said we could remove it if it's still that bad, but he wouldn't be able to prescribe muscle relaxers or anything like that.
Before my husband and I tried to conceive, I tried the IUD Paragard; Mirena alternative. While the insertion hurt, the aftermath of it was so much easier. Never a problem. It was great!
Sorry....maybe more than you wanted to know.
Good luck!
